masks

polymer clay Time mask with watch partsFanciful, festive, or scary--Halloween or Mardi Gras, or an elegant costume ball; masks have always granted a sense of mystery and fantasy.

Their use in theater and religious ceremony is well documented in many times and cultures.

Here at the Polyclay Gallery, we feature full sized masks that are wearable as costume components, or can be hung as part of a decorative collection.

In addition, miniature mask pendants can be worn on a cord or ribbon.

Full sized masks have grosgrain or satin ribbons at the sides for wearing or for hanging. The ribbons allow for size adjustment as well--these are one-size-fits-most!

Masks are slightly flexible, but don't crush or forcibly bend them.

There is a leather carrier loop in the back of the miniature masks used as pendants.

miniature polymer clay mask projectMasks utilize metallic and pearlized clays, mica powders, gold or silver leaf, and dichroic glass. Some feature beads for simple eyes or teeth--they can be made in so many styles. Masks are fun, even when they are scary!

Many are stamped, impressed, or caned, and some are even decorated with glitter, rhinestones, and lace! The decorative effects are limited only by one's imagination.

miniature polymer clay masksThese are some miniature masks from my collection. All are made to fit within a three inch square.

Many in my collection are mounted and framed, but some are kept for wearing on a cord or chain.

Shown below are these masks and many more from Internet Swaps. We've framed and mounted them on blue wool felt remnants from Billiard Table coverings. Its only a small part of the growing collection. More than 300 of them will be showcased in the upcoming book "The Art of Masks in Polymer Clay", which is due for release later in 2010.

Miniature masks are also featured in a BIG project just completed with the Artist In Residence Program and members of our local elementary school. We built a colorful millefiore garden, and created over 190 miniature masks.
